Scorpio maurus typically has a glossy black exoskeleton with gold or yellowish markings, especially on its pincers and tail. Adults can reach lengths of about 6 to 7.5 centimetres excluding the tail. They are nocturnal and generally solitary, preferring to hide during the day and hunt at night. They are venomous but their sting is usually mild, similar to a bee sting, though it can cause allergic reactions in some individuals.
